More fun in paradise!

Okay, okay!!! I know it has been to long since I published an update! The good side of that is that you don’t have to wait around and wonder/worry about what is going to happen. You can find it all out right here!!!

It has been an emotional roller-coaster the past week or two. The following is the large part of why.

About a week ago (no, I don’t remember the exact day), Nádya and I went downtown to get our paperwork going for the marriage certificate. They told us that I needed one more document for submission. The document was a verification that I am actually single, so it had to come from the state government. So, I emailed my parents and they spent a day going to get that document for me (THANK YOU MOM AND DAD!!). They also said that we might not be able to get married on the 23rd because the schedule was full or something. I don’t understand how that works, but its what they said, so we have to go with it.

So, after getting my much needed document in the email, we went to the mall and had it printed out for us (that was a chore because printers are not very ubiquitous here). We were still unsure of when the official date would be, but we had a pretty good idea that it would be the 30th of July, or the 6th of August. Fast forward two days to Tuesday of this week. Nádya took the afternoon off so that we could once again meet with her sister and brother-in-law (so they could attest to our signatures) at the place where we needed to register (sorry, I can say it, but I can’t remember how it is spelled). Nádya and I waited for a long time—or what seemed to be a long time—for Allan and Hérika.

We finally decided to go ahead and get the process started. Once we showed them the documents and all, they were happy to help us. When we got to the part where we pay, I could tell that something was not right. Remember that this whole conversation is taking place in Portuguese, and I don’t know enough to understand completely what is going on, but I had a good guess. It turns out that the man we were dealing with wanted a bribe of $50 Reals. At $200 Reals marriage to a foreigner is already more expensive than a regular marriage, so he was going to give us a “discount” of R$50.00 as long as we paid him the money from the discount. Neither of us liked this, so we left.

On our way out the door, we found Allan and Hérika coming to meet us. We told our story, and they said: “Well, there is another office up the street a ways.” So we went. We confirmed that what the other office was doing was not right, and started the paperwork for our certificate. Since we had left our documents at the other office, we had to go retrieve them. We did that. I had also forgotten the card that I can access my money from… or at least thought I had. So we had to go back Wednesday to finish the process. Turns out that the card was right there in my wallet after all.

I think we can safely say now, that the date of the wedding will be the 30th of July here in Teresina Brazil. For the majority of our readers (who are in the United States) we plan to have a reception when we get there, and you are all invited. We don’t know when that will be yet though.

The mosquitos are getting more brave every night, but I have a weapon: A fan. This morning when I looked at the floor there were about 100-150 mosquitos which had met their fate in the moving blades of this fan. I still had 13-17 new bites.
