Anecdote - Senhor Isadore Irandir - Holy Irony

We have found it useful to use small stories in class to help students read real-life things in English. I found the following (see link) and find it quite humorous, but I am not sure how to handle this theologically. Any help is appreciated:

  1. That's a funny story! As far as the theology... I suppose it depends on Senhor Isadore's heart. If he was praying like a pharisee -- making long prayers in public to be seen by men -- then I think that God may have been bringing him down a few notches.

If he was truly engaged in communion with his father in heaven, then I suppose it illustrates that even when we walk in fellowship with God we are not immune to trials, setbacks and disappointments in this life -- trials which may even come because of our fellowship with God.

  2. I agree, Patrick. You may have known, but I was being a bit tongue in cheek when I asked for help.

While I found the story humorous, it also served as a reminder that the physical posture of one's body while praying is not necessarily indicative of the attitude of the heart, or the purpose of the time.

  3. Hey, Karl,

That is a delicious little story! So much told in such few words.

Patrick was very sharp on his theologic interpretation, but here is my contribution:

Faith without works is dead. (James 2:7).

I think the guy was right to give honor and ask for protection to the Lord (but being him a Brazilian, it is not easy to determine that it was to Jehovah he was addressing his prayer), but he probably forgot to put his faith in action. Or it could be that the other guy had prayed before for a chance to make a goal and took his chance when he sw it!
