Portuguese Challenge: Brazilian Abbreviations

ConversãoOne thing about learning a new language is learning its
abbreviations. There can be a lot of pitfalls, but this can be very confusing. Here is a possibly-to-revealing look into my own thought processes, and how I figure stuff out.
When I saw the sign in the picture above (the one on the right), and spent a few minutes before I figured out what it actually meant.

Due to the advent of cell phone text messages, we sometimes see (in English) things like, "u r l8." Which, with a little work, sounds much like "You are late." What was tripping me up in the case of this sign was the third line; I was not sure what "K7" was, and could not figure out why or how one one convert vinyl to CD.

I eventually figured out that "vinil" was referring to records (you know, the vinyl discs). So I was left pondering what in the world "K7" was supposed to mean. It took me about five to ten minutes waiting for my student before I realized that if they were converting records, the other logical thing in that group would be cassettes. But why "K7"?

It finally dawned on me that since cassette is spelled the same in both English and Portuguese. In Portuguese, the letter "K" sounds like "ka." The number seven (7) is spelled "sete," but pronounced sort of like this: Setch(-y).

I ended up sitting there dumbfounded at two things: My seeming stupidity that I didn't just figure it out right away, and the fact that I actually figured it out on my own.

Does that make any sense to anyone other than me?

  1. Huh... that's funny that they do the same junky phonetic abbreviations we do. That one works out pretty well. I wonder if it is mainstream enough that people would know immediately what K7 is.

  3. I tried to figure out the poster before I read your posting. I only spent a minute trying to figure out K7 and didn't get it, but after reading your thought process it made perfect sense. So what does that say about me??? I hope all is well for you and Nadya. Please tell everybody "hi" for me.

I have no idea whether this is mainstream or not. This is the only place I have seen it.

    B:
Thanks. But if you were really bored and really curious you might have gotten it.

    Brooke:
I am glad my thought process made sense, but I am not sure if that would be more of a commentary on you, or on me... :D ;)

We are doing well, and I will pass on your message.
