We had the serendipitous opportunity last night to see one of the biggest hot air balloons in the world. Well, I am not exactly sure of that claim. But a 40 meter by 40 meter image of the sun looming in the night sky is pretty awe-inspiring. (Forty meters is about 131 feet.)
The images seen above are available for viewing in large format: Cauê Balloon Photos
I did some searching around on this, and found a couple of interesting things (some of which I already knew)
- Cauê was voted mascot of the Pan-American Games (Wikipedia) to be held in Rio de Janeiro this summer (2007).
- The image of the sun was chosen to remind us that sport—like the sun—is for everyone.
- This balloon is the largest balloon made for marketing purposes in Latin America.
- Google automatic translation of article on the balloon: Cauê
- Another article (not translated, but has lots of pictures): Mascote Cauê
- Yet more pictures of Cauê.
There was also some sort of show along with the balloon being there, but we were not around when the festivities started. The crowd was pretty big for being a Sunday night in Teresina. I would guess it was around 500 including those of us who were not in the park itself. It could have been bigger, but I am not sure.
