Summary of Karl's trip to the States

Whirlwind. It is sort of cliché, but that is how I felt the trip went by. So many people to see, and things to do, and so little time.

I said before I left that I would update while I was there. Unfortunately, I that plan was hampered by a lack of time, as well as an unhealthfully slow internet connection. So, I am doing an update now.

Instead of detailing everything that happened in my little-over-two-week-trip, I think I will overview the major events. Some of the details may be a little messed up, so if the one I mess up is one you know about, let me know. We will go in chronological order:

Wedding:

The primary reason I went was that my brother, Nathan, got married on the 20th. I arrived the 18th in the afternoon, and we had the bachelor party that night (I guess he wanted to be well-rested for the wedding, or some-such.).

The next day, I got to rest a little, as well as having the rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner that night. I recall being very tired, and was probably not a lot of fun to be around.

The food was very good. I do remember that!

Saturday the 20th of May, we did the picture thing before the wedding, and got the ceremony started at noon. I am pretty sure a woman would tell you all about the flowers (which were beautiful), the dress (which was also very chic, as they are saying here in Brazil), the other decorations, and, of course, the bride (I can only think of one more beautiful--mine). I am not a woman, though.

My tux was smelly. The last person that wore it had forgotten to use deodorant, or something. It also became apparent that the designer shoes I was wearing--well, the “designer” forgot the inside part of the shoe... they were pretty uncomfortable.

All of that, though, did not overshadow the very special time with friends and family, and seeing my bro get married. It was a beautiful time, and... Well, how about I quit talking, and show you some pictures. There are more, but these are the highlights. My dad took the pictures, so he is not in any of them for that reason (Just in case you felt left out, dad.).

Packing:
After the wedding, I rested a bit, and visited with some of the family was around. It was good to see them, as well as my church family on Sunday.

The rest of the week I spent packing my belongings better. My parents are moving, and I needed to get my things in order as much as possible, as they are storing them for me.

I did see a few friends during the week, which was wonderful. I am blessed to have wonderful friends, and very supportive ones, at that.

When I had all my boxes packed, I put them in a little truck my dad owns, and my brother, Ryan, and I headed to my parent's new home in Idaho. My mother's parent's live near there, as well as other family, so we visited them as well. Another great weekend.

Of course, it was quite a drive; essentially, two days of driving, and one day to visit and rest.

I knew I had to sell some things in order to make the finances work, as well as everything fitting in the storage space. So, undaunted by the impossibility of the tasks (well, “undaunted” might be exaggerated a little lot), I looked in the first places I could think of to sell. God blessed my efforts, and everything I had to sell sold within that week. With one exception, and it looks like my '71 Jimmy is going to sell as soon as we get the title stuff worked out.

The last weekend, I saw more friends, and visited my home church once more.

What's With This Job?
I got some emails after the last entry asking what the deal was with my new job. Sorry, I have not kept you very up-to-date on that.

Nádya's brother works at a company that he really likes, and gives him great benefits. So, he was able to hook us up with jobs there. Since we are in “hurry up and wait” mode, we decided to give it a shot.

As a result, it looks like we will be here another year, at the least. We are looking forward to having our own house, as well as me having a job. It would have been nice for both of us to visit together for this reason, but that did not work out, due to the huge wait time for visas to the US at the moment.

Yeah, I will miss my family, friends, and guitars for another year, but that is better than being away from my wife for any amount of time. We (at the moment, at least) plan to visit next year sometime. There are a million and six possiblities between here and there, though, so don't start making big plans yet. :D

Nádya Update:
She is feeling quite good today. Good enough to be pulling pranks and making jokes all day. As I have said before, we get the results of the biopsy on Tuesday.

Flying

The good news is that I have in my hot hands tickets for passage to the city I once called home (I still call it that, but now that I am married to a Brazilian, its a little more complex). I will be there the 18th, but probably will not have any time until the 21st or so, as the primary reason I am coming is my brother Nathan´s wedding.

Unfortunately Nádya will not be able to go with me, because there was no time to schedule an interview for her visa by the time we knew we could go. We are all sad about this, but life is lame sometimes.

I plan to be there for a couple of weeks (I leave the 5th of June), and hope to visit some family in Idaho in that time, as well.

I will get some pictures up here one way or another of all the happenings (the camera recently started veiwing the world a little differently), so check back often for all the latest.

Let me know if you want to go to coffee or something.

The Wedding.

I am bound to leave something important out, as it is late here, and I am very tired right now. If you have questions, just post them below, and I will answer them as soon as I can.
Well. We are back from the honeymoon, and recovered from the bus ride (sort of), and our sunburns (well, not so much for me). The wedding was wonderful, the ceremony was very meaningful, and the festa... Well lets just say that it was more of a photo shoot for us... I think the person who had my camera took around 110 pictures, and the professional photographer shot over 300 pictures that evening.
The only MAJOR disaster was that the decorator decided to do it the way she wanted to, instead of the way we asked her to do it. Hence the Green Monster (the green background at the front of the church), and other strange things.
I am very thankful to a friend here named Kennedy (as in John F.) who was gracious enough to translate the wedding on the fly (and on the spot, he was pretty much asked during the wedding by the pastor). He did an excellent job. He is an English teacher here in Teresina.
Summary of the wedding: (Please excuse my being a guy here, and not explaining/describing things as well as a person of the fairer sex might...) It is pretty much what you would expect from a wedding in the States, but with a few small differences (which I have never seen in a wedding in the states anyway).
First, the groom walks down the aisle for his entrance. That was pretty special/weird for me because her mom accompanied me. I think typically my own mother would have done this, but she was about 10,000 miles away at the time.
Second, we had communion together during the wedding. This was a special moment for us. It was a very beautiful picture of how God sacrificed so much for us to become his sons and daughters.
I hear the party afterwards was good too. I really don't remember much except posing for a ton of photos. I think the party started around 9:30 or 10 PM, and we were some of the last ones out at about 2 am. Nádya and I were very tired and even more dehydrated by that time. I hope at least some of the pictures were good!!!
In the next couple of days I plan to write more, as well as add pictures of our honeymoon trip to the beach (hence the sunburn). Okay, I am really tired now...

The day before the big day. (II)

Its been one of those muggy hot days here. I looked at my thermometer and it read 95 with 57% humidity. It was raining at the time, and it has cooled off a bit but it is more humid now. As soon as it rained the mosquitos came out in force too, so I am itching like crazy, and trying not to scratch.

I am praying that tomorrow it will be much dryer. My tux will be drenched otherwise. Yep... I will be wearing the full monkey suit tomorrow.

It has been an eventful evening around here. We got the presents delivered to the house. It works a little different here: We had to sign a contract with the store we made our wish list at that said that we would not make a list anywhere else... and other stuff too. It was in Portuguese, so I did not understand it all. Anyway, the store kept most of the gifts there and delivered them to the house today. You can check out the pictures for yourself.

Many people have been in and out of the house today. Most family, some friends, and no enemies (that I know of). Being around a lot of people at once tends to wear me out, but the added language barrier can suck the energy out of me very quickly. I am tired.

Fortunately for me (as far as I know anyway) there is not any sort of “bachelor party” tradition here...

Its exciting to be getting married, but there is that twinge of sadness that my family could not be here. They would have liked to be here, but it just did not work out. It will be good to see them again when I return to the States. I am looking forward especially to seeing my brother Nathan who will be back from Iraq in a few weeks. He left before I returned in January, so it has been almost a year already since I saw him.

One of the things that happened this evening was that all of us got manicures and pedicures. Thats right, even me. My fingers have never looked so good. I put some pictures of that in an album for your viewing pleasure. Very exciting I know...

Yluska is a bundle of energy. She is Nádya's brother's (Junior) daughter. She is 3 and very precocious, energetic, and does not care that I do not understand her Portuguese. She just keeps talking to me. Put some pictures of her up too. She will be in the wedding along with the other girl (sorry, did not catch her name/relation).

The day before the big day.

Wow... Its kinda crazy around here. Friends and family are in and out of the house, things are being staged for the party. Its kind of exciting. Of course, I was already excited... Anyway, just thought that I would let you all know that everything is going fine. Could be that I won't respond to emails etc. very rapidly at times this month, as Nádya is on vacation, and we have some travel plans in the works. we will also be working on getting her visa, which remains a “work in progress” because we are having trouble getting information as to where we need to start.

The wedding is on!

The invitations either have been delivered or will be soon (I think there are still a few left around here). As I write this there are a little over 13 days until the wedding. Excited? Yes. Nervous? Why in the world would I be nervous? --Aside from the fact that I will only know a few people there, and will not be able to speak directly with most of the guests. And, I will not know most of them at all... LOL

Its been really busy around here, but I still have quite a bit of time for being bored. I spend much of the day either reading the news on the internet, or playing game demos... That gets old after awhile though. As my visa stands, though, I am not supposed to work (that may change soon though), so I have few options. God is providing for us--money is tight, but I know God will provide for what we need. Enjoy the new pictures!

The big day

Well, to day is the big day. Except that we have (as of this morning) changed the plans once again. We really are getting married. Just on the 27th of August now. This is pretty strange to me to, so hang on, I will do my best to explain it.

The big factor here was that, until yesterday her parents did not have the means with which to put on an appropriate wedding. Its a big deal here to have a wedding in a church, as if you are married outside of the church, it is looked down upon. Gossip spreads. Its just not any good.

So, now that her parents have the money, we can start planning the wedding. That is the only real reason for the delay. If we had the money a couple weeks sooner, we would have the wedding today. If there was no money today, we would get married today (but without all the trimmings). If I were the only one who had an opinion we would get married today.

As it stands now I am okay with this. I am hanging in there. Yes, all the delays are a bit frustrating, but I know that the woman I will marry is worth it. My patience will pay off in the end. God is good to his children, and he gives us good gifts. She is the best gift (excluding, of course, the most excellent gift of His son).

I would have sent this sooner, but I wanted to be sure about the news I was giving out before I told everyone. Thank you for your patience.
